From Horses to Horseless Carriages: Haddonfield Embraces the Automobile

November 19 @ 7:00 pm

Free

Join the Historical Society of Haddonfield for Doug Rauschenberger’s lecture, “From Horses to Horseless Carriages: Haddonfield Embraces the Automobile.”

At the beginning of the 20th century, the horse remained the predominant mode of transportation for residents and businesses of Haddonfield. Gas stations, car dealerships and automotive repair shops had yet to appear.

That was about to change, rapidly and dramatically, over the next few decades. By the middle of the 20th century, there were many gas stations and automobile businesses throughout the downtown, far more than one could imagine for a town the size of Haddonfield. Yet by the end of the 20th century, the automobile business landscape had gradually but steadily diminished, so that today only two auto repair shops (with only one pumping gas) remain.

Can you remember the locations of the gas stations or perhaps the last car dealership? Do you have a memory to share? Join us as we review Haddonfield’s rich automotive history.

The lecture is free to attend, but please register on Eventbrite.
